What Is Hollow Form Metalwork?

Updated: Mar 28

By Pamela Ambrosio

When people see my larger sculptures, one of the first things they ask is, “How heavy is that?” Most are surprised when I tell them they’re lighter than they look. That’s because many of my pieces use a method called hollow form metalwork.

Hollow form is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of working with a solid block of metal, I create a shape that appears substantial, but is actually formed from multiple pieces and hollow inside. This makes the sculpture easier to move, safer to display, and allows me to create more dramatic forms with less material.

It’s a technique that requires patience, precision, and a real feel for balance. I sketch out every design first, thinking about how the light will hit, where the weight needs to be, and how the piece will live in a space.

For me, hollow form isn’t just a construction method. It’s part of the story. Turning industrial strength into something that feels light, elegant, and full of movement.
